Theory: the phone app is a thing because Nintendo intends to push the switch to its limits.

It makes sense, looking back. Certain games (smash for example) would reboot the 3DS into a more compact OS, and on wiiu, voice chat was only possible on char select (not during gameplay).

I'm guessing there's a good reason they're going with the phone app: they packed everything that'll possibly fit into that little tablet, and they intend to make use of it. So in order to do so, they're dumping a bunch of features on a phone app so the switch doesn't get weighed down.
